Which Stripology Ruler Should I Buy?

One of the most common questions we hear from new quilters is, "I want to be a Stripologist, which ruler should I buy first?" Our honest answer: start with the Stripology XL. It's the workhorse of the family and the ruler most Stripologists keep on their cutting table every single session. From there, you add the others as your projects call for them. Here's how each ruler is designed, what it does best, and how to decide which one to buy next. 1. Stripology XL: The Workhorse (Start Here) The Stripology XL is the largest ruler in the family, with slits starting at 0" and running to 20". This is the ruler Gudrun reaches for when cutting big yardage. Best for: - Full width-of-fabric (WOF) cuts - Sub-cutting strips into squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, and parallelograms - Trimming blocks up to 12 1/2" - 60-degree angles (the only Stripology ruler that cuts 60 degrees) The slits are cut every 1/2" into the ruler, and the charts in our Master Your Stripology Rulers book let you cut 1/4" increments on the same ruler. This is our #1 recommended first ruler. 2. Stripology Squared: Smaller Space, Same Cutting Power Working with a smaller cutting table? The Stripology Squared is built for you. It cuts WOF yardage just like the XL, but its slits go up to 12 1/2" instead of 20", giving you a much smaller footprint. Best for: - WOF cuts on smaller tables - Classes, retreats, and sew-day travel - Trimming and squaring blocks up to 12 1/2" - 45-degree angles It has the same 1/2" slit spacing as the XL, and with the charts in the Master Your Stripology Rulers book it also cuts 1/4" increments. Pairs perfectly with the XL when you want portability. 3. Stripology Squared Mini: Small Blocks and Travel Need something that works well for smaller blocks? We recommend the Stripology Squared Mini. At 8 1/2" x 12 1/2", it's the smallest ruler in the family and perfect for finer piecing. Best for: - Trimming blocks and units up to 6 1/2" - Appliquรฉ projects and small-format piecing - Retreat sewing and class demos - 1/4" cuts using the ruler's built-in turn-around feature A great companion to the XL or Squared when your patterns call for smaller units. 4. Stripology Quarters Mini: Specialty Precision Cuts The newest addition to the Stripology family, the Stripology Quarters Mini is the only ruler in the set with slits every 1/4". Best for: - 1/4" cuts built directly into the ruler (no chart needed) - 1/8" increments using the slits as guides - Trimming blocks and units up to 6 1/4" in 1/4" increments - Just-the-right-sized HSTs (half-square triangles) and flying geese units Designed for specialized precision work. If you make a lot of HSTs, flying geese, or any unit that lands on a 1/4" or 1/8", this is the ruler that saves you the most time. 5. Compare at a Glance A side-by-side comparison of the four rulers across the specs quilters ask about most. Size - Stripology XL: 17 3/4" x 22" - Stripology Squared: 14 1/2" x 17 3/4" - Stripology Squared Mini: 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" - Stripology Quarters Mini: 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" Slit Spacing and Reach - Stripology XL: slits every 1/2", up to 20" - Stripology Squared: slits every 1/2", up to 12 1/2" - Stripology Squared Mini: slits every 1/2", up to 6 1/2" - Stripology Quarters Mini: slits every 1/4", up to 6 1/4" Maximum Block Trim Size - Stripology XL: up to 12 1/2" - Stripology Squared: up to 12 1/2" - Stripology Squared Mini: up to 6 1/2" - Stripology Quarters Mini: up to 6 1/4" 1 1/2" Strips Without Repositioning - Stripology XL: up to 14 strips - Stripology Squared: up to 9 strips - Stripology Squared Mini: up to 4 strips - Stripology Quarters Mini: up to 4 strips 2 1/2" Strips Without Repositioning - Stripology XL: up to 8 strips - Stripology Squared: up to 5 strips - Stripology Squared Mini: up to 2 strips - Stripology Quarters Mini: up to 2 strips 1/4" Increments - Stripology XL: Yes, using the charts in the Master Your Stripology Rulers book - Stripology Squared: Yes, using the charts in the Master Your Stripology Rulers book - Stripology Squared Mini: Yes, using the built-in turn-around feature - Stripology Quarters Mini: Yes, slits cut every 1/4" directly into the ruler 1/8" Increments - Stripology Quarters Mini: Yes (the only ruler that cuts 1/8" increments) - The XL, Squared, and Squared Mini do not cut 1/8" increments. Flying Geese Units (1/2" and 1/4") - All four rulers cut flying geese units in both 1/2" and 1/4" increments. Triangles and Diamonds - 45-degree and 90-degree: all four rulers - 60-degree: Stripology XL only 6. Which Order Should I Buy Them In? A common path for most quilters: 1. Start with the Stripology XL. The workhorse that handles most of your cutting. 2. Add the Stripology Squared if you want the same cutting power in a portable size (great for classes and retreats). 3. Add the Stripology Squared Mini when your patterns call for smaller blocks and units. 4. Add the Stripology Quarters Mini if you do a lot of HSTs, flying geese, or specialty 1/4" piecing. You can start anywhere based on what you make most. If you mostly piece small blocks, the Squared Mini or Quarters Mini may be the better first buy. 7. Do You Offer Continuous Cuts? (How GE Designs Cuts Fabric)

At GE Designs, all fabrics are sold in precut lengths (typically 1-yard and 3-yard cuts). We do not offer continuous cuts, and we do not cut custom yardage. Hereโ€™s why this policy exists โ€” and how it helps you. 1. Why We Do Not Offer Continuous Cuts To ensure fast turnaround and accurate orders, all fabrics at GE Designs are cut into standard lengths. This allows us to: - Ship your order same day or next day - Maintain consistent, accurate inventory - Eliminate cutting errors - Reduce fabric waste - Keep fulfillment fast during shows and high-volume launches Because of this system, we cannot cut to order or combine multiple precuts into one long piece. 2. What You Will Receive When you purchase: - Qty 1 of a 1-yard cut โ†’ you will receive one 1-yard piece - Qty 2 of a 1-yard cut โ†’ you will receive two separate 1-yard pieces (not one 2-yard piece) - Qty 1 of a 3-yard cut โ†’ one 3-yard piece - Qty 2 of a 3-yard cut โ†’ two separate 3-yard pieces We always ship clean, accurate precuts โ€” never leftovers or odd lengths. 3. Benefits of Precut Fabric Our quilting community loves precuts because they: - Save prep time - Make cutting more efficient - Reduce calculating mistakes - Work beautifully for Stripology ruler projects - Ensure color consistency within a project Precuts also allow your order to ship very quickly, even during big launches or events. 4. Need Help Estimating Yardage for a Pattern? Weโ€™re happy to help you select the right number of precuts for your pattern or project.
